Bill Conall has a checkered employment resume. ‘Checkered’ can mean multi-coloured. Some other synonyms include varied, erratic, unstable. His publishing history includes stories in several Canadian periodicals, a monthly humour column in the Northumberland News, contributions to four anthologies (Shorelines, The Men’s Breakfast, Thirteen Ways from Sunday, Local Hero) and two books. The Rock in the Water was shortlisted for the Leacock Medal for Humour in 2010, and The Promised Land – a novel of Cape Breton, won the prize in 2014.
