I am a writer and broadcaster with years of remote field experience. My work combines science and the arts.

writing

I hold an MFA in creative non-fiction writing from the University of Victoria and was a writer at the Banff Centre’s Literary Journalism program in 2010. My wilderness memoir, Paddlenorth, is published by Greystone Books with the support of the Canada Council for the Arts. I am represented by the literary agency Anne McDermid and Associates.

You can see some of my published work on the portfolio page.

broadcasting

I make radio. I’ve had the privilege of making stories for the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC) and the Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC). I’m also part of the team who created and launched Banff Centre Radio, a local station with an international scope in mountain culture and ecology.

My work has been featured by the Third Coast International Audio Festival, and in 2013 my documentary “The Whale’s Choice” was chosen for the best of narrative list by the Nieman Foundation for Journalism at Harvard University.

You can listen to some of my stories on the portfolio page.

wilderness and natural history

I have been following wildlife around for most of my life. First, I was a curious kid by the edge of a pond, then an interpreter for Parks Canada in the Rockies. After that, a naturalist and grizzly bear guide on the B.C. coast and finally expedition staff in the Canadian Arctic and Greenland. Over the last decade I’ve worked for some very fine companies including Lindblad Expeditions, Bluewater Adventures and Maple Leaf Adventures.

In my spare time, I’ve completed two 50-day canoe expeditions across the Northwest Territories and Nunavut, plus one in Northern Ontario. I have a biology degree. I know my knots.

teaching

As a naturalist and guide, I am always learning new things and helping others to learn along with me. For this work, I have been awarded a Parks Canada Award for Communications Excellence and an Interpretation Canada Silver Medal. I have also had the privilege of working as an instructor for Dechinta Bush University in the Northwest Territories and as a tutorial leader and guest lecturer at the Universities of Victoria and Guelph.
